By volume: Sun Country (24 × 16 × 11 in), British Airways (56 × 45 × 25 cm), easyJet (56 × 45 × 25 cm), Jet2 (56 × 45 × 25 cm). A bigger limit doesn't always mean free: check whether your fare includes the bag.

Which airlines charge for a carry-on?

On their cheapest fares, Frontier, Allegiant, Sun Country, Breeze, Avelo, Volaris, Viva, LATAM, Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling, Norwegian, Eurowings, Transavia and SunExpress include only a personal item, so a carry-on costs extra. United, Air Canada, WestJet, Avianca, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Iberia, Aer Lingus, SWISS, Porter, Air Transat, Finnair, SAS, Austrian, Brussels, Condor, Norse, Aegean and El Al also leave the carry-on out of some basic fares or routes.

Will a U.S.-size carry-on fit on international airlines?

Not always. A 22 × 14 × 9 in bag measures about 56 × 36 × 23 cm, which is slightly over the limit at 45 of the international airlines we track, including Air Canada, WestJet, Aeroméxico, Volaris, Viva and Avianca, most of which allow 55 cm. If you fly them often, a bag of 55 cm (21.5 in) or less is the safe choice.

Do U.S. airlines have carry-on weight limits?

Most don't. The exceptions are Hawaiian (25 lb), Frontier (35 lb), Sun Country (35 lb) and Breeze (35 lb). Many international airlines do, typically 7–12 kg.

What's the difference between a carry-on and a personal item?

A carry-on goes in the overhead bin; a personal item (a backpack, purse or laptop bag) must fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines allow one of each, but basic fares at budget airlines include only the personal item.
