We measured a standard U.S. carry-on against the limits of 81 airlines. Abroad, it's too big more often than not.

international airlines reject a standard 22 × 14 × 9 in U.S. carry-on
It's usually a centimeter or two too long or wide for the common 55 cm limit, on airlines including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Emirates and Qatar. It fits all 12 U.S. airlines we track.

68 of 81 airlines publish a carry-on weight limit, but only 4 of the 12 U.S. airlines do.

How we did this
We compared each airline's published maximum carry-on dimensions with a standard 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm) bag, the size most U.S. airlines allow. Sides are compared largest to largest with a 0.6 cm tolerance for rounding, so a bag only counts as too big when it is actually over. Volume is the airline's maximum box size in liters; airlines with only a total-dimension limit are left out of the chart.
