Quick answer

Italy uses Types C, F and L outlets. A Type C adapter works in all of them. 230 V is about twice the 120 V of the United States. Chargers marked 100–240 V (phones, laptops, cameras) only need an adapter; single-voltage devices such as hair dryers and straighteners need a converter, or bring dual-voltage ones.

Italy runs at 50 Hz, the United States at 60 Hz. Chargers don't mind, but clocks and some motorized appliances may run at the wrong speed.

The outlets you'll find in Italy

Type L sockets come in a small (10 A) and a large (16 A) size. A Type C plug fits most of them, and many Italian outlets also take Type F plugs.

Type C

Two round pins (the Europlug)

Not grounded · also used in most of Europe, South America and Asia

Type F

Two round pins with grounding clips (Schuko)

Grounded · also used in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and most of Europe

Takes Type C plugs

Type L

Three round pins in a row

Grounded · also used in Italy, Chile

Takes Type C plugs

What to pack for Italy

  • A Type C plug adapter, one per device you charge at the same time.
  • Dual-voltage hair tools, or a voltage converter if yours are 120 V only.
  • Leave U.S. power strips at home: most are rated for 125 V, not 230 V.

Check the label first

Look for the input line on your charger or device. INPUT: 100–240V means it works anywhere with just a plug adapter. A single number such as 120V means it only works at that voltage.
